Solutions to Common Edline Problems

  • If you are experiencing general problems viewing Edline pages it is likely because:
  • If you can access Edline pages, but they do not appear up to date, then the pages are being cached.
    • Depending upon your particular setup your browser, internet service provider,
or proxy server is set to cache visited Edline pages

If you are an AOL user

You may see a message that says the server is unavailable when you try to access Edline through AOL. This message usually means one of these things:

  • The AOL servers are overloaded.
Too many people are using AOL right now and AOL cannot process your request. Try again later when there are fewer people using AOL.
  • The parental controls on your account are too restrictive.
The "Adult" and "Mature Teen" parental control levels allow you to access secure sites (like Edline) at any time. More restrictive parental control levels may not. Parents can ask AOL to make the Edline site available to their children who have more restrictive parental controls.

Visit the following AOL web page for instructions: http://webmaster.info.aol.com/parentalcontrols.html.
If these suggestions do not address the problem, you may need to consult AOL's customer service.

Supported BrowsersYou may need to install a new browser. In most cases, a new browser can be downloaded for free.
Edline does not support browsers that are older than those listed here:

  • Internet Explorer Version 6.x for PC
  • Internet Explorer Version 5.x for PC, Mac OS X, and Mac OS 9
  • Netscape Version 6.x for PC, and Mac OS X
  • AOL Version 5.x, or newer
  • Mozilla/Firefox

Browser Security Settings

Edline needs temporary cookies and javascript to run properly. If Edline detects that your browser has one or both of these turned off, it will tell you. For most browsers cookies and javascript settings are part of the overall security settings. Usually the default security settings allow cookies and javascript.

Click a link below for instructions on enabling both cookies and javascript in some common browsers and internet providers. If you do not find instructions for your particular setup, we recommend you contact the customer support department of the company that makes your browser or provides your Internet service.

Web Page Caching

Web page caching is local storage of recently viewed web pages. Browsers and proxy servers store the most recently viewed web pages on the user's hard drive. When the user requests to see the content (text or images) again, instead of retrieving it from the web, the browser will search for it in a local folder on the viewer's system called the cache. The intent is to give the impression of faster retrieval of pages from the web. If the web page doesn't change very often, the effects of caching are not noticeable. Our Edline pages, however, change frequently so Edline pages should not be allowed to be cached.
