3-Year Renewal Process of E-Learning Plan and Annual Emergency/Inclement Weather Decision-Making Communication
Dear D105 Families,
I hope all is well. It seems a bit strange to send this email now with the great weather we have been having. However, I wanted to share some timely information about the renewal process for our district's e-learning plan.
Every three years, we must renew the plan through our Regional Office of Education, West40. As part of that process, we are required to hold an E-Learning Plan renewal hearing. This hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026, at 7:00 pm (during our regularly scheduled school board meeting). The hearing is an obligatory part of the renewal process and does not necessarily mean that we would decide to utilize an e-learning day in an emergency or weather related incident.
For more information on how we decide between in-person learning, e-learning, or canceling school for an emergency/weather related incident please see below.
Calling an e-learning day or canceling school for an emergency/weather day is always a last resort. It is our intention to have students learning in person unless the situation makes it unsafe to do so. My goal is to make this decision by 9:00 pm the evening before. However, depending on the timing of a significant event, it may be necessary to wait until early morning.
We seek to make decisions that are safe and educationally sound. Factors we consider include:
safety and well-being of students and staff
availability of power, internet, and the overall operable condition of our buildings
predictability of the weather
timing of the weather event, including time for staff to plan meaningful lessons and for students to prepare to learn remotely (if an e-learning day is called)
severity of the weather (extreme cold, excessive snow, flooding, etc.)
ability of buses and cars to travel safely
An e-learning day counts as a student attendance day. If school is canceled for a more traditional emergency/inclement weather day, an additional attendance day will be added to the end of our school year calendar.
If an e-learning day is implemented, we will use a late-start schedule (9:15 am for elementary schools and 9:00 am for Gurrie). This allows teachers to adjust lesson plans to best support an e-learning environment.
In some cases, due to transportation or other needs, we might call for a late start to in-person learning. If this is the case, the timing of bus routes and the start of the school day will be communicated.
Making the Decision
When determining whether conditions warrant canceling school or implementing our e-learning plan, I work in collaboration with:
the Board of Education
district staff
other area superintendents
local village departments
our bus service provider
Since many of our families also have students enrolled at Lyons Township High School (LTHS), we strive for consistency to minimize disruption for families. This may not always be possible (e.g., an e-learning day might be called at LTHS while a traditional snow day is used in D105), but please be assured it is a priority in our deliberations.
When in-person school is canceled, all after-school activities, student events, athletic events and practices, and field trips will also be canceled unless specifically announced by the school principal.
Notification About Closure
In the event of a school closing or other emergency, parents and staff can expect to receive an automated phone call, email, and/or text via ParentSquare.
Emergency closing information is also available on:
